    Inlay Jewelry

Inlay sets stone into the silver and polishes it flush: channel inlay, cut stones in silver cells; chip inlay, crushed stone set in epoxy; also stone-to-stone and mosaic. Stones include turquoise, shell, spiny oyster, lapis, coral and opal. Most pieces are T.Skies designs. One is signed Native work: a pendant hallmarked by Santo Domingo (Kewa) artist Colbert Sherman. A vintage Sunface pendant is attributed to a Zuni artist; it is unsigned, so the maker is unknown. Questions about a piece? Ask us.

    What is chip inlay?

Crushed stone set into the silver with epoxy, then ground flush with the metal. Oscar Branson described the method in 1977: "A liquid type epoxy is dropped over the stone fragments and allowed to penetrate. After hardening, the stone chips are cut down even with the surface of the silver, sanded, and polished." (Indian Jewelry Making, Vol. 1, p. 56)
