Mark Lomayestewa — Hopi Silversmith Hallmark
Mark Lomayestewa learned silversmithing at the Hopi Silvercraft Guild. Margaret Nickelson Wright's Hopi Silver, a register of Hopi smiths and their hallmarks, records him as a member of the Snow clan from Shungopavi, a brother of Clarence and McBride, who began silverwork in 1955 (Wright 2003, p. 81). He died in 1995.
Bille Hougart's Native American and Southwestern Silver Hallmarks lists him as "Mark Lomayestewa (1936-1995; Hopi)," active from the 1950s until 1995, working in overlay with "Chisel- and file-work," and gives his marks as "M L; a snow cloud" (Hougart 2022, p. 194).
His hallmark
Wright labels his mark "Snow Cloud." The printed drawing shows a round-topped dome enclosing a stepped, terraced block, above a row of four small upright rectangles (Wright 2003, p. 81).
