Speaking to Bahti (2007), Yolanda Laate described how the couple's designs begin:
“and I remember what they look like when I wake up, and I tell it to Loren”

According to Bahti (2007, p. 132), Yolanda Laate (b. 1959), born into the Corn Clan, is the sister of Sylvia Hooee and the daughter of Juan and Lyla Tethlikai, jewelers known for their petit-point work. [1]
Of her start in the craft, she told Bahti (2007):
“All I did when I was in high school was the silver drops to help our mom”

Bahti (2007, p. 133) reported that she tried silverwork herself in 1998, making about six pieces that all sold, and that in 1994 the couple first sold directly to the public at the Eight Northern Pueblos Show. [1]
