Wilbur Musket is a Navajo silversmith documented in Hougart under the abbreviated mark "W. M." — an entry partially obscured by scan degradation but identifiable by the mark and the family relationship noted. He is recorded as the father of Wayne Musket, placing him within a documented Navajo silversmithing family. His entry describes traditional forms, stamp work, and set stones.
The Work
The Hougart entry notes traditional forms and stamp work as Musket's primary techniques, alongside set stones. Traditional Navajo stamp work involves steel dies pressed into silver sheet to create repeating geometric or organic patterns — one of the oldest and most characteristic Navajo silversmithing methods. Set stones in traditional contexts typically means turquoise or coral secured in bezel mounts, a hallmark of classic Navajo style.
The Musket Family
The Musket surname appears in three separate Hougart entries in the same block (p. 218):
1. W.M. (Navajo) — traditional forms, stamp work, set stones, father of Wayne Musket. Mark: W. M.
2. W J Musket (Navajo) — repousse bracelets, nuggets, silver, gold. Mark: W J MUSKET. (The "W J" initials may indicate a different family member — possibly a son or relative — with the middle initial "J.")
3. Morris Muskett (Navajo) — silversmith and weaver, silver and gold, cast work, set stones. Mark: MOE M. (Note the variant spelling "Muskett" with double-t; may be a different family line or a spelling variant.)
An additional Muskett entry (partially scan-corrupted name) is documented with mark: MUSKETT and notes silver, gold, and "trio" or "various" materials.
Wayne Musket — the named son — does not appear as a separate Hougart entry in the corpus, suggesting he may have used a different mark or operated primarily as a buyer's contact rather than a registered hallmarker.
The mark
Mark: W. M. — the artist's initials in a two-letter stamp. The initials match "Wilbur Musket" (W.M.) and appear in Hougart as the registered hallmark. The name "Wilbur" is partially scan-corrupted but reconstructable from the initials and family notation.
