Philip Long — Navajo Silversmith
Philip Long, a Navajo silversmith, worked in stamp work, cast work, set stones and appliqué. Bille Hougart's Native American and Southwestern Silver Hallmarks lists him as active in the 1960s and 1970s, counts letter openers among his work, and names him the son of Helen Long (Hougart 2022, p. 196). Paula A. Baxter's Encyclopedia of Native American Jewelry names Helen and Philip Long among the smiths active from the 1950s through the 1970s and records them as known for silver katsina figurines (Baxter 2000, p. 117).
Sheila Tryk's Santa Fe Indian Market pictures a set of his, a bracelet, pin and ring of stylized Hopi kachina figures, made around 1960 (Tryk 1993, p. 72). Hougart's list of his subjects also includes Yei figures (Hougart 2022, p. 196).
His hallmark
Hougart gives his mark as P L, conjoined, which may carry a rayed symbol and sometimes sits on an applied plate. Note that Hougart files his entry under the spelling Phillip Long (Hougart 2022, p. 196).
