Matthew Coriz — Kewa (Santo Domingo) Silversmith

Matthew Coriz is a Kewa (Santo Domingo) jeweler whose range runs from rolled heishi to silver overlay. Gregory Schaaf's American Indian Jewelry I lists him as Santo Domingo, born 1953, active from about 1967 in rolled heishi, mosaic, silver overlay, stampwork and set stones, and records that Charles and Josephine Coriz taught him to drill and string heishi (Schaaf 2003, p. 123). Bille Hougart's Native American and Southwestern Silver Hallmarks lists him as Kewa, active since the 1960s in overlay, stamp work and inlay (Hougart 2022, p. 96).

Schaaf gives his forms as heishi, silver beads, bolos, jaclas, rings, necklaces, concha belts and pendants, in silver and gold with turquoise, coral, lapis, sugilite, charoite, spiny oyster, mother-of-pearl, jet and shell. As of 2003 it recorded a first place at the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show, which he exhibited at from 1989 to 1999 (Schaaf 2003, p. 123).

He described his method to Schaaf: "When I go to bed at night, I think about what I can make that will be different. I use many kinds of materials" (as quoted in Schaaf 2003, p. 123).

His hallmark

Hougart gives his mark as MATT C., which may be with a bear symbol (Hougart 2022, p. 96). Schaaf records the same stamp, Matt C., with a bear hallmark (Schaaf 2003, p. 123).
