Devin Edison — Diné Silversmith

The road to the bench

Devin Edison is a Diné (Navajo) silversmith, born and raised in Albuquerque, with family from Many Farms, Arizona, in the Navajo Nation. He'll tell you the bench was never the plan.

There were no other jewelers in his family. He taught himself beadwork in high school and sold it at flea markets. When Central New Mexico Community College opened a jewelry program, his mother — who worked in CNM administration — told him about it; he'd originally enrolled at CNM for carpentry. He switched, completed the jewelry program, and holds a jeweler's certificate from it. It was there that his instructor, Harley McDaniel, introduced him to T.Skies — the connection that brought him to the co-op bench where he works today, and where he now serves as the co-op's president.

His mark

Devin's maker's mark is the initials DE set between two small figural stamps, with Sterling struck below. He signs his work this way consistently, so the mark reads as his from piece to piece.

We don't name which of the program's certificate variants Devin holds — that isn't in the record we work from, so we say only that he holds a jeweler's certificate from the CNM program. We also don't interpret the two figural stamps in his mark; that's his to tell.
