Celebrate National Relaxation Day
After all the stress, anxiety and fear brought on by Covid, quarantine and business closings, the world could use a bit of relaxation. A day of calm, of chill and of indulging in our favorite hobbies is the right medicine for what ails us now. So it’s a good thing that it’s time for National Relaxation Day.
August 15th is National Relaxation Day (in case you didn’t know). According to some, the idea was proposed in 1985 by Sean Moeller, a nine-year-old from Michigan. Others say it’s along the lines of Slacker’s Day, a holiday begun in the UK in 2001. No matter what its origins, all of us can get behind the idea of spending twenty-four hours doing something fun and, well, relaxing.
The unofficial holiday is intended to get folks to unplug, to take a break from phones, video games and the craziness of the world to remember the simple pleasures in life. It’s about taking it easy, spending time in nature, time with family and friends. And most of all it’s about unwinding and having fun.
No matter how crazy life gets, maybe especially when life gets crazy, the healthiest thing we can do is to stop and remember what’s truly important to us. Taking care of those we love, and of ourselves, will create memories and bonds that can see us through the craziest of times 2020 can throw at us. So take a day off, chill and celebrate National Relaxation Day to its fullest.
